Lost in Yonkers (1993), directed by Martha Coolidge, follows teenage brothers Jay and Arty Kurnitz, who are left to live with their strict German grandmother and mentally challenged Aunt Bella in 1942 New York after their mother dies and father struggles with debt. The brothers, amidst dealing with their harsh grandmother, meet their small-time gangster Uncle Louie and witness Bella’s quest for independence, in a story that touches on healing from family trauma and finding one’s own voice.
