Rosa Lowinger is an author and art conservator whose new memoir Dwell Time: A Memoir of Art, Exile, and Repair  (Row House Publishing)  is the first book about art conservation to be written by a practitioner for a general audience. Inspired by Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table, the book is the culmination of a decades-long career restoring artworks, and it blends her  practice with a history of her  family- Jews who left Eastern Europe in the 1920s and then Cuba in the 1960s. The book addresses repair as a metaphor for healing family traumas handed down through generational migration. The chapters are about specific materials, and there is a great deal of insider information about the way art conservators make decisions, but wrapped in a readable story about a damaged family.
